Tunnels, temple, dome: what is documented about Epstein Island and what is not

Why this island attracts stories

Three conditions meet here: there is little imagery, access is blocked, and the buildings look unusual. In that gap, interpretations grow faster than evidence.

Distance in time adds to it. Much of what counts as settled today comes from releases in 2025 and 2026, six years after the first drone videos ^6,3.

The test used here is simple. A claim stands only if it appears in a permit file, an official release or solid reporting. Everything else stays marked as a claim ^1,3.

The same goes for numbers: where reports diverge, the range comes with its document ^14,13.

Size and distance: why the figures change from report to report

Few details are played off against each other as often as the size of the island. The reason is dull: several documents sit side by side, each with its own figure, and mixing them turns a difference into a contradiction.

For the distance to St. Thomas everything depends on the reference point. AP wrote in 2019 of a little over one mile to the south-east, the New York Times stayed in that range in 2023, CBS News gives roughly two miles offshore, a charter operator about three miles south ^10,11,9,12. The reference points differ: nearest headland at the East End, a harbour, the capital. No nautical-chart measurement appears in any report reviewed.

Area works the same way. NBC News rounds to 70 acres, the Virgin Islands Daily News gives 71.5 acres from agency and court files, the March 2022 listing 71.6, the Miami Herald and CBS News 72, AP about 75, and Australia's ABC converts to 28 hectares ^{2,14,13,16,9,10,15}. The two most precise values, file and broker, sit a tenth of an acre apart. One report on the listing printed 90 acres, a number found nowhere else ²⁶.

Elevation is not official either: mapping services put the high point at roughly 25 metres and list an average elevation of three feet beside it, a different measure ¹⁷.

Hence a plain test: a number without a document behind it is a quotation, not evidence. Location, area and ownership sit in Little St. James, the island behind the name, the structures in map and buildings.

The striped building: permitted as a music pavilion

The structure enters the Virgin Islands permit record in 2010 as a music pavilion. The filed drawings show an octagonal pavilion of about 3,500 square feet meant to hold a grand piano; roughly 1,800 square feet of music room were permitted, filed together with a pool, a cabana and a spa ¹.

What was built is something else. Instead of an octagonal pavilion with a stone facade and several front windows, the finished building is rectangular, has no windows on the front and appears to rise at least 30 feet; an official noted the difference in shape, and reporters found no evidence that the department inspected or approved the structure as built ¹.

In March 2011 the then director of coastal zone management wrote to the owner's lawyer that he was very concerned major development was proceeding through a series of minor permit applications ¹. After 2011 the records show no further applications for Little St. James ¹.

The word temple appears in none of those documents. It comes from coverage and from the internet, not from the file ^1,3.

Good to knowAnyone writing about this building should separate two things: what was applied for, and what stands there. Both are documented, and they differ.

The main-house floor plan and the applications of 2007 and 2009

Three area figures circulate for the main house, and they do not measure the same. The permit file lists the existing house at 8,124 square feet, the November 2007 application an addition of 16,747, and with terraces, stairs and pool the property around the residence was to reach 46,697 ². Online they appear side by side as if they cancelled out.

The application is unusually detailed. The extension held three wings: a spa north, a large living room connected to a below-ground theater west, and a kitchen, dining area and two guest rooms south. Kitchen, living room, office and three guest rooms of the old house were to be gutted, the terrace north of the living room demolished and replaced by a pool ².

The documents do not say what was built, or whether the permit was granted in full ². Reports on the August 2019 search describe a 24,000 square foot residence with two pools and a spa, matching old house plus addition ²⁴.

The second batch came in December 2009, five months after release from jail in Florida: a 2,400 square foot sun deck with coral stone paving in the vegetable garden, a stone patio on the crest, a 10,400 square foot pool pavilion, a 1,320 square foot garage and a tennis court in a sheltered hollow ². A year later came the music pavilion, again a minor application ¹.

That makes the coastal authority's complaint legible: major development ran through a series of minor filings ¹. In April 2026 the department told a senator's inquiry that Epstein-era applications open at the 2023 sale had lapsed automatically ²³.

The term main house misleads in itself: a contractor of six years on the island described separate buildings for bedroom, kitchen, living room and office in a Danish-influenced style ¹⁹. Which structure stands where is sorted out in map and buildings.

The gold dome and its disappearance

In images from before 2017 the building carries a large gold dome. In the 2019 images it is gone, and it was never replaced ^1,3.

Accounts of the cause differ. A wire report said it flew off during the 2017 hurricane season; NBC News quoted locals pointing to Hurricane Maria of 20 September 2017; other reports simply speak of storm damage ^1,7. Where the dome ended up is not documented.

A second detail often taken for a mystery is none: the prominent door on the front is painted on, according to coverage of the 2019 drone videos ²⁷. The reporting by NBC News and AP does not mention it ^1,7.

Statues, palms and a vegetable garden: what the grounds actually hold

The figures carry more meaning online than the sources support. The record is thin but concrete: two large white-and-yellow bird statues at the top of a stairway near the dock, and a life-size Holstein-Friesian cow statue on the grounds, moved weekly according to locals ¹⁸.

Gold-coloured figures stood in front of the striped building in an aerial video from March 2015: one with a trident in the manner of Poseidon, two shaped like birds ⁷. Whether they came down later is open. NBC News described white statues scattered across the property in March 2026 ⁴.

Planting is better documented than most expect. Epstein had the native vegetation cleared, ringed the island with tall palms and set two large U.S. flags at either end ¹⁹. The 2009 application names a vegetable garden as the deck's site ². A botanical survey does not exist.

No file and no major outlet offers a reading of the figures; documented are positions, shapes and dates ^4,7. Sales material does not help either: a summary of the 2022 offer adds a cinema and a flamingo lagoon, and such lists are advertising, not surveys ²⁵.

Tunnels under the island: what the record shows

No official finding of tunnels under the striped building or the island has been published ⁴. Two quite different things are documented and are often mistaken for it.

First, the November 2007 expansion application for the main house shows a below-ground theater in the west wing, filed together with a spa and a new kitchen wing ². Second, the 2017 application for the neighbouring island Great St. James lists an underwater office and pool among the planned structures ⁵.

Both are plans, not surveys of what exists. NBC News and Newsweek classify the tunnel claims as conspiracy theories that grew out of 2019 drone videos and the odd shape of the building; as of March 2026 it has not been confirmed that any tunnels were built ^4,3.

What the drone videos actually show are mostly ventilation grates of partly buried service buildings, the kind that go with a generator, a cistern and a water plant ⁴.

The 2017 application concerns the neighbouring island Great St. James, not Little St. James ⁵.

Lines from the file releases that no major outlet has checked

Since the release of 30 January 2026, quotations have circulated that supposedly come from e-mails. The best known: a tunnel under the main house served as workshop and storage. Established is only the kind of property material the data sets hold: blueprints, photographs, logbooks, boat-trip records, drone footage, travel e-mails and visit documentation for 2012 to 2019 ²². No large newsroom has worked through those e-mails.

Two further attributions sit in the same place. A timeline dating the building's construction to July 2013 through March 2014 is credited to NBC News but is not in its report ¹. For the repainting, smaller sites name early 2024, while the documented state is this: in March 2026 the building was painted over and boarded up ⁴.

Two claims around the files have been examined explicitly. The Justice Department and FBI memorandum of 7 July 2025 records that a review of more than 300 gigabytes found no incriminating client list and no credible evidence of blackmail, and affirms the death of 10 August 2019 as suicide ²¹.

The counter-story did not stop there. In May 2026 the company that owns Little St. James sued over a landing justified by the claim that Epstein is still alive on the island ²⁰. What is litigated is trespass, not the claim.

Fixed numbers travel about the search of 12 August 2019 too, such as seized devices. Documented is that agents fanned out in golf carts at about 10.30 a.m. ²⁴ and that locals saw large items carried away ¹⁸. No inventory exists. Which release holds what is in the Epstein files and the island.

What the 2025 images actually show

In December 2025 the file releases brought out photographs from inside the striped building. What is described is an unfinished room: a ceiling painted as a cloudy sky with animals and constellations, an empty ornately carved shelf, exposed cement boards, an opening covered with plywood, and two shrink-wrapped mattresses by a large window ⁶.

That description so far comes from a single outlet, and the date the photographs were taken is not given there ⁶. It fits the permit record, which shows the building was never completed in the approved form ¹.

The present state is different again: NBC News reported in March 2026 that the building is painted over and boarded up, with white statues still standing on the grounds ⁴.

Where the footage behind the stories comes from

Almost everything circulating today was recorded from outside or during unauthorised landings. By March 2026 NBC News counted more than 15 videos on one platform showing people sneaking onto the island, at least nine of them from 2026, reached by rented jet ski, by drone or by swimming ashore ⁴.

In July 2026 a ground-level video of about 16 minutes spread through a news agency and was picked up mainly by tabloid outlets ⁸.

That kind of material explains much of the rumour trade: it shows rooms without context, without a date and without a second source. An image comparison published in 2025, by contrast, found the compound almost unchanged since 2019 ³.
