The Epstein files and the island: what is public and how to search it

Three kinds of files that get confused

When people say the Epstein files, they usually mean one of three things. First, unsealed court records: in early January 2024 a federal court in New York released documents from a civil case begun in 2015 and settled in 2017; the first batch ran to more than 900 pages, and Little St. James is named in it ¹².

Second, congressional material. The House Oversight Committee published about 33,295 pages on 2 September 2025 that it had obtained from the Justice Department by subpoena ⁴, and on 8 September 2025 estate records including the will and the 2007 non-prosecution agreement ⁵.

Third, the Justice Department release under the Epstein Files Transparency Act. The law was signed on 19 November 2025 and required publication within 30 days ⁶. Releases began on 19 December 2025, with the large batch following on 30 January 2026 ^9,2.

The distinction matters because the three carry different weight. Court filings are what a party alleged, agency files are agency files, and neither is a finding of fact.

What the files hold about the island

For this section only a narrow slice matters, and it is well described. According to reviews by CBS News and Al Jazeera, the December 2025 and January 2026 data sets include material on the Little St. James property: blueprints, photographs, island logbooks, records of boat trips, drone footage, travel e-mails and documentation of visits between 2012 and 2019 ³.

They also surfaced an investigation that had not been public before: a Drug Enforcement Administration inquiry opened on 17 December 2010 into wire transfers in the U.S. Virgin Islands and New York ³.

The interior photographs come from an official documentation made in 2020 and were released by members of Congress on 3 December 2025 ¹¹.

Appearing in such records is not an accusation. The department and news organisations note that names show up in many contexts, including press coverage unrelated to the case ^6,3. This section therefore names no one from visitor or flight records.

Good to knowA name in a file is not a charge. That distinction is the most common error in writing about these releases.

What was redacted or held back

The act allows redaction only on narrow grounds: victim identities, depictions of abuse, active investigations and certain national security material. Withholding for embarrassment, reputational harm or political sensitivity is expressly barred ⁶.

The department states on its portal that victim names and other identifying details were redacted, and that audio redactions were made with a steady tone ¹. In the February 2026 report to Congress it says nothing was withheld beyond the act's exceptions and standard legal privileges ⁶.

Even so, about half of the collected material remains unpublished: more than six million pages were collected, about 3.5 million released ².

Days after the large release the department acknowledged redaction failures and pulled several thousand files; lawyers for survivors reported many instances of names and contact details left visible ⁷. Since April 2026 the inspector general has been auditing the whole process ¹⁰.

How to search the originals

Start at the Justice Department portal. It carries the downloadable data sets, court records from about 45 proceedings, and material released under freedom of information requests ¹.

For the island, the useful parts are the data sets with photographs and property records, plus the Virgin Islands court files ^1,3. Al Jazeera has published a visual guide to which data set holds what ³.

Three habits help when reading. Check the date of the document, not the date of its release. Mark allegations from complaints as allegations. Draw no conclusion from a list that only carries a name ⁶.

What the files do not deliver

The joint memorandum of 7 July 2025 states that after a review of more than 300 gigabytes of material no incriminating client list was found and no credible evidence that Epstein blackmailed prominent individuals ⁸.

The memorandum also affirms the suicide of 10 August 2019, citing the bureau's review of the housing unit video ⁸.

For the island that means the files document operations, buildings and travel, but they do not replace findings of fact on questions no court has decided.
