Context. This article describes the real island Little St. James using public sources: court records, official releases and reporting by major outlets. Epstein Island Game is a satirical game; what happens in it is invented and not an account of real events. The two are kept apart here.

Florida: the agreement of 2007 and the guilty plea of June 30, 2008

The record opens with a contract, not a verdict. On September 24, 2007 the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Florida signed a non-prosecution agreement that set aside a federal charge; a drafted indictment of 60 counts was never filed 1.

What followed was a state case. On June 30, 2008 Jeffrey Epstein pleaded guilty in Palm Beach County Circuit Court to two counts under Florida law, felony solicitation of prostitution under Fla. Stat. section 796.07 and procurement of minors for prostitution under section 796.03 1. The sentence ran in two consecutive parts, twelve and six months, 18 months in county jail in total, then twelve months of community control and registration as a sex offender 1.

Less than 13 months of that were served. From October 2008 a work-release arrangement allowed twelve hours outside the jail each day; on July 22, 2009 the sentence turned into a year of home detention that ran to July 2010 1. The department examined its own handling only years later, concluding on November 12, 2020 that the U.S. Attorney of the day had shown poor judgment, while no lawyer had committed professional misconduct 2,6.

What the court ruled on victim rights on February 21, 2019

Eleven years after the plea, the agreement itself became the subject of a case. On February 21, 2019 U.S. District Judge Kenneth Marra held in the Southern District of Florida that prosecutors had broken the Crime Victims' Rights Act by keeping the deal from the people it concerned 3.

The ruling reached the procedure, not the contract. Marra left the 2007 text standing and in September 2019 refused damages and any further remedy 4. That mattered later: the wording of the same document became the central argument on appeal in the case against Ghislaine Maxwell 14.

The indictment of July 8, 2019 and the dismissal of August 29

The Southern District of New York indictment was unsealed on July 8, 2019, two days after the arrest at Teterboro Airport. It carried two counts, sex trafficking of minors under 18 U.S.C. section 1591 and conspiracy under section 371, for conduct alleged between roughly 2002 and 2005 in New York and Palm Beach; together they carried up to 45 years, and the plea was not guilty 5,6.

One point matters for the island: no conduct on Little St. James appears in that charging document 5. On July 18, 2019 U.S. District Judge Richard M. Berman refused bail and classed the defendant as a flight risk and a danger to the community; press reports put the rejected defence package at roughly US$77 million in collateral 7.

The death of the defendant on August 10, 2019 left the case unable to proceed, and Berman signed the dismissal on August 29, 2019 8. Custody became a file of its own: on June 27, 2023 the department's inspector general delivered a report of 128 pages, named 13 staff for misconduct or dereliction of duty and made eight recommendations the prison service accepted 9.

Ghislaine Maxwell: verdict, sentence and the road through the appeal courts

The charges against Ghislaine Maxwell were made public on July 2, 2020, the day she was arrested in New Hampshire. Six counts were brought, two of them perjury counts that were severed and never tried; prosecutors put the maximum at 35 years 10.

A Manhattan jury convicted her on five of the six counts on December 29, 2021 and acquitted her on one 11. At sentencing the court entered judgment on three of them, counts 3, 4 and 6, while counts 1 and 5 fell away because they captured the same conduct twice 16.

U.S. District Judge Alison J. Nathan imposed 20 years on June 28, 2022, with five years of supervised release and a fine of US$750,000. The guideline range came out at roughly 15.5 to 19.5 years; prosecutors had asked for 30 to 55 years, the defence for about five 12,13.

The appeals turned on the 2007 agreement. A panel of three judges at the Second Circuit affirmed unanimously on September 17, 2024 and held that such agreements bind only the district that signed them, unless they say something broader in plain terms 14. The Supreme Court refused the case on October 6, 2025 without reasons; the government had argued that its parties were Epstein and the Florida prosecutors alone 15,16.

A habeas corpus petition went the same way: U.S. District Judge Paul A. Engelmayer rejected it on August 25, 2026 in an opinion of 67 pages 17.

The Virgin Islands suit and the settlement of November 30, 2022

On January 15, 2020 the Government of the U.S. Virgin Islands, through Attorney General Denise N. George, sued the estate in the Superior Court at St. Thomas, docket ST-20-CV-14. The claim rested on the territory's statute against criminally influenced organisations and on its anti-trafficking law, and asked among other things for forfeiture of both islands 18.

An amended complaint of February 12, 2021 added the two co-executors in person and ten companies Epstein had created 19. Tax formed a side track: one of his firms held an economic development certificate from February 2013 to January 2023 with a 90 percent exemption from territorial income tax, and a local paper put more than US$144 million in benefits at stake over the full term 22.

Terms were reached on November 30, 2022 and announced a day later: US$105 million in cash, half of whatever a sale of Little St. James brought in, US$450,000 for environmental work on Great St. James, and the return of more than US$80 million in tax benefits 20,21. The estate also had to sell both islands to unrelated buyers; what came of that is in the article on the 2023 sale.

Four weeks later the Attorney General's term ended: Governor Albert Bryan Jr. removed her from office on December 31, 2022 without stating a reason, days after she had sued JPMorgan Chase on December 27 34.

The bank cases: four settlements and one regulatory penalty

A regulator moved first. On July 7, 2020 the New York State Department of Financial Services imposed US$150 million on Deutsche Bank by consent order for control failures that included the handling of the Epstein accounts from 2013 to 2018 29.

The class actions that followed went before U.S. District Judge Jed S. Rakoff. Deutsche Bank agreed on May 18, 2023 to pay US$75 million covering August 2013 to August 2019, without conceding wrongdoing; final approval came on October 20, 2023, with 30 percent of the fund going to fees 27,28.

JPMorgan Chase agreed the largest figure on June 12, 2023: US$290 million, finally approved on November 9, 2023, again with a fee award of 30 percent, roughly US$87 million; reporting put the class at more than 100 claimants 26.

The territory ran its own case against the same bank, filed on December 27, 2022 in the Southern District of New York under number 1:22-cv-10904; by July 2023 its demand stood at no less than US$190 million 23. Weeks before the trial date both sides settled on September 26, 2023 for US$75 million: US$55 million for local charities and victim services, US$10 million of it for mental-health care, and US$20 million for legal fees 24,25.

A fourth settlement came three years later. Bank of America agreed on March 27, 2026 to pay US$72.5 million for the period from June 30, 2008 to July 2019, denied wrongdoing, and won preliminary approval on April 2 and final approval on August 27, 2026; about 90 eligible women were reported, again with 30 percent in fees, around US$21.75 million 30,31.

The estate settlement of February 2026, worth up to US$35 million

The newest case aimed at neither a bank nor a government but at the way the estate was run. A class action filed in Manhattan during 2024 accused the two co-executors of having assisted the operation through company structures and bank accounts 32.

Terms were filed on February 19, 2026 and reported a day later: up to US$35 million, with a floor of US$25 million if fewer than 40 eligible claimants come forward; payment comes out of the trust, not private assets, and the defendants conceded no wrongdoing 32.

U.S. District Judge Arun Subramanian granted preliminary approval on March 3, 2026 and set the hearing on final approval for September 16, 2026; no result had been reported that day 33. A court filing from October 2025 valued the estate at roughly US$127 million 35. Which papers from these cases are public is set out in the article on the files.
